Why 33 Buttons on Cassock?
The 33 buttons on the cassock are a reminder of the 33 years Jesus spent dedicated to his Father before he was called to ministry. However, the function of these buttons has been lost in recent centuries.
The wearing of the cassock is not merely an indication of a cleric’s rank or status; it is also an indication that they are there to serve others. It is also indicative that they have taken on a role in service and ministry rather than seeking personal gain or power.
The emphasis on this garment has declined over time due to many changes within Christianity and religious institutions such as shifts in political power, leadership, and authority.
The distinctive style of the cassock is partly a result of the simplicity of its design and the fast production during the Renaissance. For example, it was intended to be produced cheaply, in order to ensure its availability for a vast population of clergy.
The cassock is traditionally made with 33 buttons on each side, which were designed by Leon Battista Alberti, who designed various other things as well. As he worked at court, he needed to be fashionable as well and so created this simple style that allows him to remain super stylish while being affordable and available for everyone.
Roman Catholics and other clergy members often wear a cassock underneath their liturgical clothing as well as daily attire. The cassock has long sleeves, a button-down collar, and a slim fit.
- Note: clergy belts are sold separately.
